Zuzu, yeah I knew about  Fruity Pebbles and Cocoa Pebbles but didn't want to offend your culinary sensibilities (joke).

Regarding sweets, if you were going GF long-term, I could make lots of suggestions.  For now, Snickers, Reece's PB cups, Dove milk and dark chocolate.  Amazon has lots of gf products cheap if you don't have local sources due to your rural location.

For extra-quick cookies to make with your kids: 1 cup PB (crunchy or smooth), 1 cup sugar, 1 egg, 1 tsp. baking powder.  Mix PB w/sugar, add powder and then egg.  Roll into 10-12 balls, roll in sugar. (Smush with fork if desired.) Place on pan on parchment paper or aluminum foil.  Bake at 350 degrees for 10 minutes, cool on pan for 10 minutes.  Eat. Or dip into melted chocolate.  This takes less than 10 minutes to make and makes very tasty cookies.

Oh and it should have said "lunchmeat, cheese, condiments rolled up in lettuce leaf" in previous post re: lunch.

Hope it helps and you get some relief from this or some other method.  Ask if you have more questions.

OK I've been totally gluten free for 14 days now, and I still have heartburn.

groundhog, can I have permission to eat a goddamn muffin already? Or do I need to keep on it?

Zuzu, I think any benefits from being GF would happen within 2-3 weeks.  If you haven't had a "eureka" moment, it's possible that being GF won't help.  I don't think it's possible to master the GF diet in two weeks, but if you're not a "true" celiac, it's unlikely that small amounts of contamination would stop your healing.

You could give it another week to be really sure.  Or you could try gluten: Sometimes that might show results - e.g. you get really sick after eating gluten after being GF for a time.

Hope you're getting some relief!

Well, I ate a piece of pizza last night and a donut for breakfast today--did not have any heartburn. So that wasn't it.

I did discover an amazing dessert recipe on the Chex website. Have you ever tried Lemon Buddies? http://www.chex.com/recipes/RecipeView.aspx?RecipeId=49162&CategoryId=340

This will be a family favorite.

How lucky that this thread should turn up! Well, not lucky . . . I've had what I think are bouts of acid reflux for three of the past five nights or so. I started an anticoagulant recently, and I assuaged my anxiety on the first night of weirdness by going in the Internet to see if acid reflux might be a side effect. I don't think it's listed on the packaging, but I did find a lot of complaints about it from users of the medication. Fortunately I had acid reflux once before, for about two weeks many years ago; otherwise I might have been worried that it was some kind of cardiac crisis. Whew.

I have got to remember not to eat right before going to bed. I wonder if this explains why I haven't had much of an appetite lately; has anyone experienced that?

GERD medicines are very safe and effective for most people. Try a Zantac 150. If that doesn't work, take a round of Prilosec. (Of course, save money and buy the generic versions of these.)

Oh, well.  It was worth a try.  Helps some people but you're obviously not one of them.

Did you see the NYTimes article on low-acid diet for hb relief? http://well.blogs.nytimes.com/2011/11/07/tired-of-feeling-the-burn-low-acid-diet-may-help/

I wanted to add a word of warning for all of you acid reflux sufferers out there:  I discovered I had acid reflux when my dentist asked me why more than half of my teeth had lost all of their enamel!  It turned out that stomach acid had eroded my teeth while I slept.  I had dismissed my acid stomach as something transitory, because it would come and go with some frequency.  So if you know you have acid reflux/GERD, be sure to see your dentist every six months to check on your enamel.  Trust me, it will save you a lot of money.  Like: buy a fancy new car kind of money, as I unfortunately discovered. And dentists don't have the kind of financing deals that your local BMW dealership has.
