Thanks for everyone's replies.  My concern had more to do with the long-term prospects for Irish society/economy.  It seems pretty clear that joining the euro was a huge mistake: it eliminated less painful means of dealing with the financial crisis (inflation/devaluation), and now there will be years of unemployment and massive fiscal drain.  Yes, that's less of a problem for someone who gets a good academic job -- but it does mean that lots of people are emigrating again -- and while my kids could indeed go to other European countries to get jobs, I'd prefer not to put them in a position where they would be likely to have to do so -- emigration under (economic) duress is painful, as the Irish know all too well. 

I apply for jobs in the mode suggested by S-E; I still might apply, but my current situation isn't dire and I'm not yet convinced that it would be a good move to make.
