Hi, all,

I am applying for academic positions in Saudi Arabia. They want me to scan the first page of my passport for verification. Is it a must to do it for a job application over there?

Depends on the point in the application process. A request for a scanned passport page as part of the initial dossier would be unusual. If you have already interviewed and are somewhat further along, universities must have a copy of the passport (main information page) in order to proceed with giving an offer to you.  It is more a matter of government requirement.

Thanks for your reply. I have not been interviewed. I sent them the CV, teaching statement, research statement, etc... Then he replied that I need the copy of diplomas and certificates and also a copy of my passport to proceed.  But I am hesitating whether I should follow what he said.

It's normal practice not only in Saudi, but also in the Middle East in general. This is because they want to ensure that you are who you are before they start processing your papers.

I spoke once to the HR of a university in the Middle-East and he told me that I would be surprised by the number of applicants who apply for positions with fake certificates and even passports so that they would get the job. The fake passport thing, I believe, is related to the fact that salaries are based on passports in the Middle-East.
