Scheduling for the fall. 

I can teach an online course and a face-to-face course (the same course) in the same semester.  Is this a good idea, or is it just confusing?  I know that it is not like teaching 2 sections of the same course because the student assignments will be different.

I've taught the same class f2f and online in the same semester many times over. It's not as confusing as you might think. What's actually much more confusing is teaching two or more f2f sections on different schedules (like a MWF and  TTh section). That's where I'm constantly getting the "Hey didn't I already talk about this?" thing going on.  Keeping the f2f and online sections separate in your mind is no problem, because they are such different experiences for you, the teacher. The only potential I see for confusion is that when you grade the online students' work, you have to keep in mind that you can only hold them accountable for the readings (text and stuff you've posted online) and not what you've said in the live lecture.

I like it when my online class is a few days or a week ahead of the f2f. In the online we do all these great discussions, and it gets my mind warmed up for the upcoming lectures on those topics.

I'm teaching one section of 202 online and one section hybrid (half and half) in the Fall...

I have done this many times and don't find it confusing. I actually do try and use similar assignments, partly because the students will compare notes and complain if they think the other section has it easier. But stagger the due dates! Also, be prepared for a few students who think they can switch back and forth: "I am going to Burning Man next month so I can switch to the online class for like, a week or two?" No, you may not.

I agree--I'm teaching the same class online and F2F this semester and find it much less confusing than teaching two face-to-face sections. It has been interesting to discover that the two classes have very different reactions to the material. I haven't noticed such a dramatic difference among f2f sections.

I have taught the same class F2F and online in the same semester for several years. I keep the assignments and due dates the same. I use the same lectures for both classes. F2F gets the regular lecture, online gets lecture notes or audio lecture to match. Using this formula, I have had no problems.

I have taught the same class online and face-to-face once, and I did find it to be a problem. Then again, I was a doofus, and I assigned different textbooks because I wanted to try out an eBook for the online section. If I hadn't done that, I think it would have been fine. Maybe. I don't much like sitting down to participate in an online discussion when I've already had the same conversation with a live class...
