My on-line University wants me to put my phone number in my syllabus.  I guess other instructors do it, but it seems crazy to me.  I'm on-line pretty often so I am available to my students.  I don't want to have them phoning me at all hours of the night.

Do you have an office number you can post?

Or, maybe you could 'accidentally' put in a typo?

I would NEVER give class students my cell/home phone numbers, but I do give them to my lab students because I want them to call me if those woven baskets burst into flames or other emergencies come up. But that's me.

Yep, give an office number.

If they are insisting on a cell/home number, I would build in extreme grade penalties, for example, for calling before or after xPM or on days that start with S.  Hit em where it hurts.

I have my Bricks and Mortar Office, I suppose I could give that.  Thanks.

I give my number out, it is in the syllabus, and a signature line in my email.

Want to guess how many calls I get a semester?

Under 3.

And I have yet to be called at an indecent hour.

YMMV of course, but it hasn't been an issue for me.

H$lls to the no.

Very, very, very few people have my home or cell phone number at work. In case of a true emergency, the secretaries have it. I work in a place with a wonderful, amazing secretarial staff who I trust to recognize a true emergency and only call or give out my number in case of a true emergency.

No way I'd put my home number online.

Home phone number?  I don't give that out to my colleagues, let alone my students.

I have created a Google voice number where they can leave texts and even voice messages.  They can be forwarded to other numbers if you want.  It works well.  It's free.

Office only.  I resent the way my wife gives it to her students.

That does not sound right.

Maybe it's written in a heart-shaped note with lipstick kisses. That could cause resentment.

Office phone, but not personal phone. As it's an online university, do you have an office with them? Probably not. You can respond by letting them know they are welcome to provide you with a cell phone for class purposes.

That WOULD be bad.  But, no, it's MSW students who usually reserve their calls for nights and weekends.

I put my cell number on the syllabus and tell students they can call me most anytime. Of course I teach mostly grad students. I never would have done it at my old job with a 4/4 load of surveys.

Office number only. I hardly get any calls. Even so, I would never ever give out my home or cell phone number. (I teach large numbers of lower division students). If scheduling required me to call an online student from home, I'd even block my number so it wouldn't show up on the student's caller ID.

During the years when I had a listed phone number I got a handful of calls at home. They were all stupid things like the ghost student who wanted to know when the final exam was.

Same here. I gave out my home phone when I was a brand new TA; I reasoned that the professors at the SLAC I attended usually gave us their numbers, and it would be a kind thing to do. After that first semester, I never gave it out again.

I teach at a CC, and I'm in my office plenty. Students rarely call, but they email all the time. That's how I like it.
