1) This probably includes getting caught with a joint (or even a can of beer if under 21). 2) What fraction of college students in general have been charged? Are football players worse than the rest of the male student population? Are they worse than the nationwide average male of the same age? Worse than the average male of the same age and SES? Without answers to these questions, 7% is a pretty meaningless figure.

I think we need more comparative data. I mean, what percentage of tenured Latinists have criminal records?

Our local police recently arrested a sixteen- or seventeen-year-old because he gave them the finger.
I was fairly surprised that two of our Police officers got out of their car for anything other than a pastry.
The charge is not expected to stick.

After I looked at the source article, i made a comment about how the CHE is putting up articles that seem designed to generate click traffic rather than discourse. With that in mind, I came over to the forum section with the idea of raising the question of whether CHE comment sections are simply intended for generating emotional reactions or for stimulating some form of thoughtful (or at least semi-thoughtful discussion - or even wry commentary). And there it was the fiona's new thread - sort of an answer to my question - leaning toward the wry commentary. A quick glance at the Fiona's profile was impressive - showing posts as (5.737 per day) until I realized it was a period and not a comma between the 5 and 7. Still, somewhat daunted, I have decided to retreat back into the outer darkness where I often lurk in silence.

Free speech...? Wonder if the cop's ever heard of that... If those idiots who picket military funerals get the free speech excuse for spewing that hate, then this teen ought to be able to flip the finger anytime, anywhere.

Don't let anything stand in the way of a good story. Jeff Benedict is a muckraking sports journalist (and English professor) who either doesn't understand numbers or prefers to use misleading numbers to advance his cause of getting people upset about college athletes. The Chronicle gives him legitimacy, either because their editors don't understand the issues or, more cynically, because they don't care and only want the traffic, as an earlier poster remarks. In an earlier manufactured-crisis report, commenters quickly corrected Benedict's math, but as is Chronicle practice, this result (facts are opposite to his claims) won't prevent the Chronicle from promoting him, and is not corrected when the article is released to periodical indexes (Chronicle does not include comments in those or, usually, correct inaccuracies). I have used these articles in class to illustrate common, easily preventable errors resulting from failure to think. Students' faith in news media is so low that my doing that probably has little effect in that direction, but I wish that this publication were not a source of such good examples.

Big deal. I'd wager that significantly more than 7% of my students have a criminal record if you include minor in possession charges and whatnot. We want to make criminals out of everyone and wonder why we don't have money for heath care and education. Go figure.

Students involved with theater, music, computers and other cerebral activities simply don't get into trouble as much as those students who are barely passing basket weaving. When you read the local news reports of student arrests, you almost never see anyone from sports like golf, swimming, cross country or volleyball. This is only what is publicly reported. Many cases of assault do not result in arrest and are swept under the carpet.
