I am on a 9-month contract spanning the academic year. I have an offer to teach some online courses during the summer, but my school is asking me to jump through a bunch of hoops to get permission, which I might not get. Given that I take this employment when I am not under contract, can they even prevent me from taking outside employment?

Dont ask, dont tell.

What kind of hoops?

We have a bunch of paperwork to complete if we do such things.  It is more a matter that they want to be informed, and show that there is no conflict of interest.

another way to proceed is to ask your department chair what summer employment opportunities that they have that are online and what they are willing to pay.  You have bills to pay and people to support.  You are not under contract then, and unless they want to pay you for that time, to leave you alone.

I would fill out the paperwork though, and I doubt that they will deny you.
