Well, I was suffering headaches and TMJ pain, and apparently my lower jaw is slightly misaligned, requiring surgical correction. Apparently this will be a sagittal split osteotomy (I think!). The shift will be very small, something like 2 or 3mm. I was wondering if anyone has had surgery like this, if they could tell me what their experience was? The blogs I've found are mostly written by people undergoing much more extensive treatment (upper AND lower jaw). My doctor says people with office jobs are back at work within a few days, but I would like to hear from people who have actually gone through it.

My jaw is like this, but I've never had to have the surgery. I'll be sending you good thoughts!

I am familiar with this type of surgery. Even relatively minor surgery in that area can cause some unexpected issues, such as motion sickness. Otherwise, it was absolutely a great experience for me. The TMJ headaches went away, and I was able to do such Herculean tasks as eating salad or apples again without horrible pain. Make sure you have someone who can help you around, just in case you have temporary bad side effects. I had no problem working, just going in cars or other conveyances.

I have not had this type of jaw surgery, but I did have surgery as a teenager in which they cut open both sides of my jaw and fitted an expander into the roof of my mouth (too narrow for all my teeth, that original mouth was). While they were in there, they removed my wisdom teeth as well. I don't know which after-effects were from which part of the surgery, of course, but in any case I was pretty miserable the night after the surgery, sort of puffy and subsisting mostly on Carnation Instant Breakfast for the next day or two, and things got steadily better after that. For whatever that's worth.

I tell this to anyone and everyone having surgery: If you can, find out in advance what prescriptions or other special items you'll need post-op. Buy them yourself before the surgery, or have someone else pick them up for you before you leave the hospital. (Not once, but twice I've found myself waiting in line at the pharmacy in a post-surgical haze, waiting for much needed pain pills).
Good luck and best wishes.

Thanks for the tips. Good to hear you had a successful outcome, high_energy_photons!
I just had my second pre-surgery consult, and at the clinic all the surgeons are hot young guys. Last time I had Zachary Quinto, today it was Josh Duhamel. It will be one of them or one of their GQ colleagues actually doing the cutting.
I'll be hospitalised for a week, with jaw wired shut and a feeding tube (grisly, but at least I'll be on intravenous painkillers).

Correct, as usual, TZ. That's because you are not Dude. TZ, however, is Dude. TZ is my favorite. I wish YOU began with A.

I'm checking into the hospital tomorrow for surgery Wednesday morning. I'm feeling very nervous terrified. I also will not have internet while I'm there, so I'm loading up my kindle and packing magazines to read.
Thanks for all the good wishes, I'll update when I get back (in about a week).
