I'm a Baptist. And you all are what? *** *****s?

Do you try to write assklown? :)

I don't have any specific information about the JC or ETSU. I did spend some time not too far away, in NC, and I grew up in northern Appalachia. Reneer06 hit the nail on the head. There are smugly ignorant, racist people everywhere, including in northeastern and mid-Atlantic cities. Ditto for gun-toting trailer trash welfare mamas and meth labs.

Cost of living in the area is low. Real estate is much cheaper there than in Boone, for example. The Appalachian thing is to be a little stand-offish until you get to know the person as an individual, then you're put into  friend/neighbor category as long as you don't put a pig farm in your backyard or a billboard about Armageddon in your front yard.

My advice is to check out ETSU's financial situation and the happiness level within the department and campus.

Is anyone still seeking information?  The OP was a few months ago.

Well, as the OP, I can say that I am not personally seeking any more information.  I decided NOT to AFTDJ, because I did not like several things I saw in the department.

So, thanks folks who commented back then.
Feel free to continue discussing JC and ETSU if you want, though.

You could likely make this statement about most places, but I've found that the colleges and departments at that university are highly varied.  They range from ones doing quite exceptional things in both teaching and research to ones where everyone seems to be just biding time to retirement.  Some of the statements in this thread don't reflect what I have heard from many colleagues, so just as a note to any in the future--YMMV.

I have an upcoming campus visit with very little time on campus (flying in and out within 48 hours) so I would be grateful for any further contributions on this thread.
