As has been posted, many universities require you to pay back your sabbatical pay if you don't return. This may not be specified in your letter, but may be in the faculty handbook or some other obscure university document. I have not heard of anyone being asked to pay back benefits.  I know of several cases where the university did not require the faculty to pay back salary, although they could have. In these cases, the faculty bent over backwards to make sure their departure did not harm the university (e.g., gave enough time to make sure courses were covered). So I suggest you keep things as cordial as possible. Your reasons for leaving are completely irrelevant, so I suggest avoiding the "but I'm leaving for a good reason" language you have here. Once you get a contract you can talk to your current university about options.
