I'm considering applying for a three-year lecturer position at an Australian university.  I'm a U.S. citizen and I have a same-sex partner, who is also a U.S. citizen.  If I were to land this position, would my partner also be allowed to a) legally live in Australia (NSW), and b) legally work if suitable work were available?

This is the first Australian position I have considered so while I've researched the department and the university, I'm woefully ignorant about Australian immigration.  Any insight would be appreciated.

You shouldn't have any issues getting your partner a visa, and they would be able to work or study in Australia.   Here are some web links that might be helpful.

This is the visa that I imagine you would initially be arriving on:
http://www.immi.gov.au/skilled/skilled-workers/sbs/

And here is info on same sex partnerships and visas:

There are a few people on the forum who are from Australia or currently work in Australia, so if you have other questions, just ask.

Also, most Universities will have an Office for International Students, or similar. They will have expertise in immigration issues. You won't be a student, of course, but don't be shy of asking them for advice once your application is in place.

Good luck. NSW is lovely, especially Sydney.
