Hi everyone,

We've now got a member-moderator framework in place and we've tested it, so we're ready to move forward. The role of member-moderators will be limited to spam-killing, moving threads, and deleting duplicate threads. This is not a community crackdown (our moderating philosophy is, and has always been, that less is more), but rather a way to combat spam. Member-moderators will NOT have access to posters' private information or e-mail addresses (only The Chronicle's on-staff moderators see reported posts), NOR will they be mediating conflicts between members. That's our job, and the powers to ban posters, block IPs, e-mail addresses, etc. rest only with The Chronicle's on-staff moderators.

For technical and security reasons, member-moderators will use their own accounts, however they'll be identified as "Member-Mods" (we realize that the title is a sticking point for some of you, but it is necessary, as the software assigns permissions by group).

We're grateful to have a cadre of member-moderators watching over the forums with us, so we can avoid a repeat of Thanksgiving's spamaggedon. We thank them for their commitment to the forums and welcome them on board.

Thanks and happy new year,

the moderators

Deleting spam is their function for now, but what guarantee do we have that that won't change? none. I still think it's part I of the phase ine.

And calling them "Member Mods" does not aptly describe their function.

I like spam more than this idea.

While I appreciate the attempt at transparency shown by giving these people particular tags, if all they do is remove spam, delete duplicates, and move threads, why is it necessary to identify them at all? From this description, there is nothing they would ever need to post in any discussion that would be part of those duties. In that case, I think that displaying the tags serves no purpose; even though I understand why assigning them to a particular user group necessary, I can't imagine that all user groups have to be publicly displayed.

Reserving the display of all variations of a "moderator" tag and other special badges for those accounts that actually can and do intervene by editing or removing posts for conduct apart from spamming may make it clearer what is happening.

Some of you are late to the party. Jonesey, we have been discussing this for a month and yet you act surprised.

Despite my post count, I really do have a life outside of the CHE.  The past month had Christmas and finals in it; checking up on the day to day activity of the CHE was rather low on my list of things to do.  With the new mod system, it's even lower.

I've been wondering that as well - and not just because those stars get in the way of my peripheral vision.

I'm somewhat agnostic on the member-moderator issue, but I am surprised that there appears to be no way to cloak the signage of their powers. I think spam-zapping is a noble cause and good on them for signing up. But the mods saying "the software wouldn't let me" is an excuse I don't accept from my students.

Fair or not, this is going to have a chilling effect on discourse.

In principle, I have no problem with the idea of forumites having spam-killing and post-moving abilities, and none of the folks with green-stars that I've noticed give me any concern.  But, I wonder: is there anything to stop one of them from deleting, for example, this post and just saying it was spam?  Does there have to be a link somewhere to enable them to delete a post?

Come on? Is this really the only way to do this?

Having a few people with the green flashing stars signaling moderator is going to have a stifling effect on all conversations. Yes, blah, blah, they can only zap spam but:

One, not everyone who participates zealously reads every post so they won't be aware of this and will only see "moderator";

Two, even if everyone knew about how limited their powers were, the stupid green stars will have an effect (and let some social-psych folks clue you in on even the most meaningless labels acquire a life of their own); and

Three, to do this by fiat like this is just disingenuous.

Frankly, how can there be a reasonable conversation in a thread when some people have flashy green stars and the label of moderator?

I call stupid.
