I am a non-smoker and have always hated smoke.  At my non-USA university it seems that the administrators and faculty are finally getting the message, one that seems to be increasingly international.  Nobody smokes at faculty meetings or committee meetings anymore, unlike what was the case 10 years ago.  Even smoking in your office is now an unspoken faux-pas.  And students don't light up on campus as often as they used to.  How is it elsewhere?  I'm much interested, because I'm thinking of going elsewhere, and this is definitely an issue!

I am working in elsewhere, and I can assure you that things are much better.  So, come.

Our entire campus is smoke free.  You cannot even sit in your car in a uni parking lot and light up.  This seems to be the trend quite broadly I think.

In my opinion, Secundem_artem is precisely correct.

I think secundem_artem, rather, has hit the nail on the head.

Here, there's no smoking inside. Used to be that people would smoke right outside the door, and folks would have to walk through clouds of cigarette smoke to get to classes or offices. Now, there are a few designated smoking areas outside, but they have to be a certain distance from the entrances. Seems like a good compromise.

I think compromise is the key issue.

CONFUSED AND SAD

Here, the suburb in which SlingerU sits has gone smokefree in all public places, including on campus.  Can't smoke in your office, your car, your dorm room, or anywhere.  Smokers can walk to the edge of campus and light up.  Works well for me, but not so well for others, I'd imagine.

And on these fora, spam is forbidden, but spammers put spam in their posts!

Reported.

(And, if the spam hadn't been enough to get your post purged, you'd have been guilty of unforgivable overuse of the exclamation point.)

Wow, first time that ever happened:  The post disappeared before I even had a chance to report it!

I'm liking how quickly spam disappears these days.

I just saw the movie Twelve Angry Men for the first time in decades the other night, and I was struck by all the (full) ashtrays on the jurors' table.  It reminded me of my undergraduate days in the 1970s, when it was common for both students (including me) and professors to smoke in the classroom during class.  Non-smokers who objected were directed to sit near the door or an open window.

We've come a long way, baby.
