Honestly, I don't care about doing it for free because I waste spend so much time on here anyway. I'd like to do it because I'm usually online when all the spammers attack (early morning in the UK) so could deal with the mess they create as they post it.
I see what you mean about the anonymity though -- the mods need to make sure they pick people who want to do it for the right reasons i.e. to be helpful to the fora, as opposed to seeing it as a way to get some control.

Yep power/control vs helpfulness/knowledgeable is what leads most forums to personally invite long-time users to be user-moderators. I've never seen this kind of cattle-call thing before, and I've been around many online communities. weird.

Most likely an open call such as this will provoke PMs. Then the mods and the users will go back and forth, and a few new moderators will emerge.

Yeah, I get it.
It's just weird. The open call is going to attract people who want power and control, and not necessarily only people who are in it simply for the sake of cultivating a peaceful community. Those invited to be moderators, on the other hand, are people hand picked because of their resourcefulness, their ability to stick to the rules themselves, that they are knowledgeable without being pedantic. As I read elsewhere once in response to somebody begging to be a moderator, "the best way not to become a mod is to ask."

Well, I certainly would have asked if payola had been attached since I spend some time here anyway, but I'm not interested without coin. But I think you're right. You have to wonder about people who want to clean up spam for free and be moderators for free.

That is it, Slinger, you're banned!
Hmmmm...no power...yet...
Alright, you aren't banned. But you are on triple secret probation.
In all seriousness, Slinger is right. I think that volunteer mods should be limited to banning spammers, at least at first. If you go to the Forums home page and look down at the logged-in users you can always find a couple of brand new spammers getting ready. IT would be nice to zap them before they can do any mischief.

If elected, I promise to ban all of you, one at a time, for increasingly silly reasons.
Your professional productivity will skyrocket.
Cool! I want to be the 14,756th person banned. Just to find out how amazingly silly the reason is!

Who wants to voluntarily clean up spam? I mean, if the job has no pay then the only reward would be messing with people.

Cleaning up spam is just like housework, it never ends and there is no thanks or pay for it. I am very experienced in this area and I actually get some satisfaction from cleaning things. I would especially like to be able to zap middle of the night spammers and I could volunteer for the early morning hours since it is often just me and the spammers here anyway. I have no desire to police the disputes that happen here though or chastise any regulars. I wouldn't touch that job with a ten foot post!

It's been rumored for years that LarryC and Voxy are (secretly) moderators anyway.
LarryC is obviously trying for a coverup by "volunteering" ostentatiously for what he's already allegedly doing.
Voxy is cleverly taking the opposite strategy by saying nothing. Never apologize, never explain.
The whole cattle call may be engineered as someone's diabolical coverup of something-or-other.
I, as usual, appear to be in on it but am not.
