We're looking for a few good volunteers who are willing to assist us in
moderating the forums. Duties may include:

-reading and monitoring the forums and answering questions
-helping to tame the spam beast and keep the forums clean
-moving threads to appropriate boards when needed
-helping to promote civil discussions and break up disputes

If you feel you have what it takes -- time, a thick skin, an even temper, a
fair mind, a familiarity with our posting rules and our academic community
-- reply below or send us a private message.

Volunteer moderators will have limited administrative privileges and will be
subject to oversight by The Chronicle's Forums administrators. The Chronicle
reserves the right to suspend or terminate such privileges at any time for
any reason.

<checks date>

Hmmm... it's not April 1st.

Some questions (I'm asking for, um, a friend):

Would it be known who the volunteer mods are?

How much of a time commitment is required, i.e., is there a schedule?

Remember people: "With great power comes great responsibility."

I am interested.  Is there a chance that such might, someday, work into a compensated responsibility?

So, I straightened the whole thing out and what do you think I got for doing it?  Really, just take a guess!

Hmm.  I could certainly help to kill spam; I already do that.  Reading and monitoring the forums is something I find I have less time for now.  I already try to promote civil discussions and break up disputes.  Perhaps time is the big concern.  Those of us with heavy teaching loads (15 contact hours next semester!) should probably think twice.  Could it be a summers-only sort of thing?

Unfortunately, I think conjugate gives good advice.

If elected, I promise to ban all of you, one at a time, for increasingly silly reasons.

Your professional productivity will skyrocket.

I really despise this idea. I don't want my fellow forumites being the hall monitors.

And I don't want Larryc as a hall monitor for certain as he is on my black list.

The mods should set it up as an election, let forumites decide which forumites they want to be the new mods.

If I get elected I promise I'll be nice to everyone.*

No, if they were going to do it this way, they should have privately pm'd a few people. Now it's just going to be paranoia if they are anonymous, and if they aren't anonymous, some forumites are going to think their big shots because they have a non-paying job.

The CHE should bring back the damn ads and pay people to do the job.

Jobs with no money attached piss me off and put me in a bad mood by nature.
