There are now 550 comments on "Ed Dante"'s piece about ghostwriting our students' papers. There's frothing, high-horsing, hand-wringing, and confessing.

http://chronicle.com/article/The-Shadow-Scholar/125329/

The practice of hiring other people to write seems to be ubiquitous, which makes me wonder:

How many people CAN actually write decent English prose?

Maybe practically everything is being ghosted by the same 37 people or so.

I write my own CHE posts, but maybe others outsource those, too. Are the many sock puppets on the fora really guns-for-hire?

Maybe the really profitable thing would be to write our own students' papers and pocket all the cash. Or just sell grades.

Given the nature of his work, I assume that "Mr Dante" won't mind if I use his phrase "I see where I'm vulnerable to ethical scrutiny" as my new tagline.

Pfft. You don't think I write those cats-and-dogs posts myself, do you?

A vice president at my old institution used to brag about how he had hired someone to write his EdD dissertation.

I worked with two psychologists who said they "used tutors" during their dissertations.  Is Ed the Comte de Monte Christo?

I recall being stunned my senior year of hs when my principal, when I was complaining of student cheating negatively impacting my class rank, remarked that there were 'a whole lot of doctors' out there who had plagiarised their dissertations.  Ah to be young and naive again.  Still, we cannot just adapt a totally blase attitude towards this sort of thing and not try to root it out, right?

While meeting with a Dean at a major R1 university during an interview, I was asked if I derived all the math and coded up my equations for my dissertation myself. I almost told him that I had a wicked-smart guy in India do all my math for me...

Ooh, southerntransplant, does this post mean you've decided not to leave us?

Sorry if I didn't see your return-to-the-fold post.

It's interesting that this works for so many fields unless they involve math/hard-science.

If only.  Oh, the years I could have saved!

Your professors were probably afraid of your galactic genius and did everything they could (behind the scenes) to thwart your hedginess.

Or music. Or art. Or theatre.

Not true. It's just that Ed Dante wasn't competent in math/hard-science. I'm sure someone else could do this kind of ghost-writing just fine -- if they were paid handsomely enough.
