AmLitHist, I have no suggestions (Canada's system is so different), but I'm sending supportive vibes to you and your family.
You're definitely not being whiny. Nor are you an unsympathetic person; it's hard for him to be in pain all the time, but it's hard for you too; BTDT with the SO's painful everything. Many, many hugs to all of you (gentle ones for your husband).
