I applied for a position where my spouse's PhD advisor (superstar) was recently hired as a prof in another department. I've also worked with this guy in the past. Now he is asking if he should think about creating a position for Ms. Totoro. That was the reason I applied of course. But there is no guarantee that the department I applied to is even in interested in hiring me. And maybe something will come up someplace else. So what should I reply at this point?

I've never been in your position.  But logically speaking, they wouldn't have asked you if it weren't a possibility, right?  So you could at least give them some kind of vague positive non-committal answer, no?  Something like: of course, that would definitely augment the attractiveness of this position even further, while I'm sure creating a position would be additional work, it would be highly appreciated, etc?  I mean, this is not a secret, right?  Who wants to live states away from their loved ones?  It's common sense, I would assume.
