Hello there,

is there any documentation about the standard teaching load in the UAE system of Higher education? Or is it only dependant on university policies?
I'd like to know the loads of

-Professors
-Associate Professors
-Assistant Professors
-Lecturers

I did my homework and there are not so many posts here that allude to this. Some consider that a 12 hours/semester (I assume it's 12 H per week, or 4 courses of about 3 ICH each) is a heavy teaching load. But if this is standard, then it would be useful to know.

Thanks for posting your experiences here.

At HCT it is 4 per term but we are often forced to take 5 or 6 due to faculty shortages. You can refuse but you had better have a job lined up.

Depends which UAE university.  I presume OP refers to the national institutions. Officially, the load is 4/4 at Zayed, UAEU, HCT for Faculties.  Loads are different for foundations instructors, and the medical faculty also have a different scheme for teaching load.

Rank by itself, as is the case in many other places, has no bearing upon teaching loads.  At one point,  some hires, called "research cluster" hires  were done with lower teaching loads (and so specified in the contract), but funding to continue the practice never materialized. As always, grants and administrative assignments might reduce load.

But, as others have said, 3-5 courses depending on need and varying schemes created by various Deans.
