When I get a sinus infection, it's always the result of sinus allergy congestion. If I can force myself to take an OTC allergy pill (generic Clariton or Zyrtec) every day during allergy season(s), I have no problems. Adding a few drops of tea tree oil to daily saline spray seems to help as well. If all else fails, I hit the Benadryl and Mucinex.

Netipot, too. (Though I just use coffee cup and drinking straw and my own mix of hot salt water.) It's important that the solution be nice and warm. With the commercial products, do they have you warm it up first?

The packs of saline solution that I buy for my neti-pot instruct you to mix the salt with warm water.

Don't waste your money on pre-prepared solutions - just mix about 1/4 tsp non-iodized salt and the same amount of baking soda (NOT baking powder) per 6 oz of filtered water.

I do the same, but with a teapot instead of neti pot, only on rare occasions.  Each time I do, hours later water drips out my nose here and there.  It seems that water stays in for while.  Haven't yet tried neti pot since nose was broken.

Spouse uses this makeshift neti pot regularly, but does not experience these watery effects.  It must have to do with variations in nose shape.

There is some nasty crud going around this year.   For the cough at night what works for me is some serious drugs.  Phenergan with codeine is great stuff and I knock myself out at night and it seems to really knock the cough back.  I don't need much during the day after this.  But it is somewhat habit forming so only take this stuff if you don't have issues with habit forming drugs.  My hard rule is I only get to take them for the medical problem they are meant for and nothing else.  But I also don't like that stuff unless I have some strong medical need to be knocked out - like bad pain or a relentless cough.  My dr told me not to take sudafed for too many days because it sort of stops working after a while.  Also I can not sleep with sudafed so I take it sparingly because it keeps me up and counters the effect of the above. I have tried the nasal rinses and they all seem to give me a sore throat so I do not use them.  I have somewhat constant albeit milder allergy symptoms throughout the year.  Sleep with h/w floors and an air filter at home.  Take benadryl with me on the road in case the hotel is a problem.

Sorry, H_G.  :(

That reminds me that I need to replace my ceramic neti pot that finally cracked  from getting banged around my sink.  I hope the plastic ones are just as good...

Thanks. Bleh. My favorite part is waking up every hour at night. Not. :(

Yea  for Neti pots!

I just read this article (although it's apparently a little old), and it sounds like it might be worth a try --a little humming never hurt anyone, right?

I've been trying it and my sinuses drain afterwards. It's only been 2 days though so YMMV. <interthreaduality>

Huh.  Sometimes I've felt like flute playing helped my sinus aches and pains, but I always attributed it to the vibrations it created.

So that's all that noise that Felix Unger used to make, right?  Blast! Can't find any clips with his honking either.
