Always very nearly hired

My teaching co-chair colleague has stepped down indicating medical issues. I also know that s/he does not want to implement policies coming from way up high. I can't tell if my adm is going to try and pressure me to take the whole job or get someone else to step in for a semester--either would be tricky (and maybe even damaging) to the position.

Dang.

It has been my experience that when someone else drops the ball, I am responsible for the cleanup.

My condolences. Perhaps you can get your teaching credits reduced in a future semester.

I would rather teach extra courses without pay than have to deal with a team-teaching environment. There can only be one egotistical know-it-all running the class, and that's me. It sucks to have two kings on the same throne.

Start mentioning to your chair right now how busy and stressed you are. It is probably to late for this to do any good, but give it a try.
