scabies

Hello wise forumites,
I am looking for support in dealing with a recalcitrant rash my 7 year old has. It started on her face the day after she got face painted at a Halloween party, and spread to her chest, and now has spread to her back. My husband, an RN, thought it was due to the face paint, but when it didn't fade after a week he took her to the pediatrician. Meanwhile, my dad who is a doctor thought it might be scabies. It is very itchy and miserable. Her face was swollen with red bumps and general swelling, as was her chest, and there were pimple-like spots on her chest and back and also backs of legs. The pediatrician thought it might be scabies or might not, but wrote a prescription for scabies cream for my daughter, and said if any of the rest of us get symptoms to treat the rest of the family at that time. Bugs of this type really get to me - yuck!
If anyone has any advice or rash/scabies stories, please post.
Modified to add - now I am itchy, although it certainly could be psychosomatic, as bugs like this make me crazy.

To me it sounds like an allergic reaction.
I've had scabies at a point in my life when I lived with dirty hippies. My boyfriend at the time and I both had it, since we shared a bed. Upon using the cream, it went away in a week or less. Of course, we had to wash everything, blankets, sheets, towels, clothes, etc.
I also get psychosomatic itches all the time, especially with the recent bedbug scare sweeping the nation. Don't worry even if you do get scabies, it is not a big deal. If you can resist, avoid going on-line to look at pictures. That only makes psychosomatic symptoms worse.

I had scabies once. The itching and bumps were concentrated around joints (elbows, knees). The treatment is to apply a neurotoxin cream (doesn't that sound appealing?) while also laundering all clothes, bedclothes, towels, and other soft goods that might have been exposed.
