So, after a couple of hours at the doctor's office, the new diagnosis is hip bursitis. I got a cortisone shot and more pain meds and a referral for PT. I'm hesitant to go while I feel so bad, but the 2 docs insisted I should start as soon as possible. I'll see.

At this point, I don't give a f... about the diagnosis, I just want to be able to walk and sleep. I didn't realize it might take a while (as in days) for the cortisone to take effect. Shoot.  Well, back to the percoset.

I'll keep my fingers crossed for you that this diagnosis actually helps, Punchnpie! Is it trochanter bursitis? That is, indeed, terribly painful--I have it on a chronic basis and when it flares it's really murder. I find very gentle heat soothing sometimes, and also learned (on the advice of another Forumite) that naproxen seems to work best for bursitis. Did anyone say anything to you about taking NSAIDS?

Yes to the NSAIDS, I've been taking them and the new docs gave me another script for them. Personally, I don't think naproxen helps me, but I'll keep taking them.  I was probably hoping for something instantaneous as opposed to healing over time. I've been using heat, both a stick-on patch so I can walk around and a heating pad while sitting at my desk.

The doc was pretty fast talking re the diagnosis (she explained a lot, but I was semi nekkid and didn't have my note taking stuff with me on the table). Just looking now on the net for 'trochanter bursitis,' I'd say yeah. All the symptoms fit. She certainly said bursitis and hip.  I've never had this before (and ain't happy to have it now). I don't believe that G-d punishes, but boy, I've had my moments wondering what I did wrong to get this. It has truly been a bear. I just hope the cortisone lets me walk by next week and travel by the end it. I really don't want to have to use a wheelchair at the conference.

I'm so sorry. Trochanter bursitis really hurts. I had it for years before I finally got fulltime job with benefits and longterm orthopedist. Even then I had to go through several cycles of cortisone shots before I finally had surgery for it.

I'm not sure you want to know about the surgical options at this point, as your doctor will probably want to try cortisone shots first. But if you're curious, I can tell you more about it.

Years?! How did you function? I can barely walk 15 steps around the house. How did you go to work, do shopping, or go to conferences?

The doc didn't say anything about surgery - though I did read that you don't really need your bursa and that there is a relatively quick surgery that can be done if other methods don't work. Did you do physical therapy?

Gah! I'll have to be sedated to sleep and in a wheelchair to function during the day if this keeps up. I can't imagine having this for years. This is where I go down the deep dark hole of hypochondria and fear, you guys. Somebody tell me something positive.

I'm so sorry to hear about this -- it sounds dreadful!  I'm afraid I don't have any specific advice -- I had some mild hip joint pain earlier this summer, and I was amazed at how long it took to heal.  My only totally off-the-wall suggestion would be to see if you can get into a pool occasionally -- I would guess that the suspension in the water might take off some of the pressure in the joint?  I hope you get some relief soon!

How did I function? Sheer doggedness, I think, and not knowing any better. By the time I had surgery, I was using a cane fulltime and handicapped parking. The surgery worked wonders. By the time the incision healed, I felt so much better.

Sorry you're in so much pain, Punch. I have no personal experience of bursitis, but I know how cortisone injections work, and if you can get through the next couple of days on NSAIDs, you should really start to notice a difference from the cortisone.

Well, that's something to hope for. Personally, I can't believe how little pain relief I get from percocet. Considering how woozy and nauseated it makes me, it's hardly worth taking most of the time.

I'm already using a cane (I have 2, one for fashion. Yes folks, even in the depths of pain and despair, punchnpie is thinking about her fashion statement) and am going for the disability placard tomorrow.

Rocking a cane is kind of cool actually, but I hope soon you'll only be using one for a fashion statement and not because you need it.
