Oh, wow, that's horrible! I'm so afraid of that sort of situation. I did ask for a higher chair or a stool in one classroom where the students can't all see me if I sit, and was told there wasn't one. (I own one, but was told I couldn't leave it in the classroom, and I'm not able to carry it back and forth to my office, so that's out). I'm only visiting faculty, so I suppose my presence for a year isn't enough incentive to buy a higher chair--maybe I should just not worry about it, either, then... I hope things improve for you, though! Good for you for being so persistent.

I have two things going for me that many don't. 1. I have tenure; 2. I have strong support from my union (Texas Faculty Association) of which I'm a founding member, and which has a dedicated local membership. Going it alone would be tough; having a supportive community, however small, is a big boost.
Visiting, eh? How about going to the Dept. Chair and asking, nicely, that one of the department's (faculty's) student assistants bring your chair to and from class for you? Seems reasonable, simple, and something that would make them feel good--helping out a visitor, showing off the institutional hospitality. Maybe I'm being a Pollyanna with this idea, but what do you have to lose on a one-year?

Abigail, I'm sure if there's someone out there, looking down on us from someplace else in the universe, they're wise enough to stay away from us.

Sounds like a good idea to me. I can't believe people are making things so hard for you all! It is disgusting!
