Hi folks,

I am a current TT who is trying to move 2000+ miles away from my current university to get closer to family. My SO is in her first year of Nursing School. Getting into Nursing Schools is super tough and it's been a multi-year process to get all of the prereqs and gain admittance. It is essentially "unheard of" for nursing school credits to transfer. How do I go about asking for a direct transfer into a nursing school, including nursing school credits? Should I mention it at the phone interview? On campus interview? After the job offer? Would this go Dean to Dean? Is it impossible?

Thanks!

Hopeful...

You've already answered your own question.

Getting into Nursing Schools is super tough and it's been a multi-year process to get all of the prereqs and gain admittance. It is essentially "unheard of" for nursing school credits to transfer.

Asking for special treatment or consideration for your SO's admission to a program based on your potential employment will raise some serious questions about your professional ethics.

Have a frank talk with your SO about your shared goals.  You may need to wait until she finishes the nursing program before you seriously consider other positions.

Waaaay premature here...

Don't bring it up.

It sounds like your only options would really be:
1) Attempt to defer the start date of a job if you get a job.
2) Have your SO start over in nursing school at the new place
3) Live apart till the SO finishes nursing school.  It would only be like 1 year, right?

Thank you for the thoughtful replies. I will heed the advice.

Would it be too much for my SO to apply to transfer and then request an expedited transfer process?

Thanks again.

RN's can enter the profession with either associate's degrees, bachelor's degrees, or occasionally master's degrees (for career changers).  Associate's programs will eventually be phased out, but owing to a shortage of nurses, there is no rush to do that.

OP, my suggestion is to wait until you are hired, or at least offered a job, and then and only then, network with your chair and talk to the nursing department chair about what possibilities exist for your spouse.  It would be pure speculation on our part to comment on the likelihood of transfer or of acceptance into the program, not being familiar with both programs in detail and the policies of the new school.

Have you been scheduled for an interview at Place Closer to Home?  Your SO's application for transfer probably wouldn't cause any problems with your potential employment. However, applying now for transfer/admission into the nursing program may be a bit of projected wishful thinking rather than planning ahead.

antiphon1, I am at the phone interview stage of the process at the Place Closer to Home.

My SO has 5 semesters left in her nursing program here in Far Away Land.

Thanks again for all of the advice!
