Job description that includes more interesting classes than EagleU, tolerable location, invitation by one of the SC members to apply, but so not a good idea for me to be on the market until the dissertation is done. Someone please tell me to NotAFTDJ. I can take it. Really.

Hey all-I need a reminder....
I have been agonizing over applying for a job for nearly two months. It is a potentially great opportunity in a somewhat depressed economic location. Schools are questionable, scenery superb, people friendly. Super interesting place.
I keep thinking that if I applied and changed my mind, I would be a cretin. And I don't want to bug my referees again. Yet, I cannot easily dismiss it either. Why should I apply again? Or not? Thanks.

Generally in cases of career change (which I seem to vaguely remember it is applicable in your case), candidates first look for less desirable places as starting points. Then they can look at climbing the ladder.
So I'll go for the AFTDJ advice.

But since you asked: you apply because you want that job, sure, but also because you want to do something a little harder, be a little better, not have any regrets, because you'll have nothing to choose among unless you do, and because your commitment to these things matters more than your reservations. So AFDTJ already and go floss. |

"Somewhat depressed economically?" That means you could have cheap housing. If schools are sketchy, you'll just have to make sure that kids get extra tutoring from you or from a professional tutor. And make sure you're okay with the Juniors going to non-Ivies unless you've got a heritage claim.
I'd like to suggest a subset of AFTDJ: A/RTDJA: Accept (or Refuse) The Damn Job Already. Here's what I do:
1) Go to My Specialty Wiki.
2) Click on My Favorite Job.
3) See that there's nothing new next to the "Accepted:" box.
4) Click on Almost My Specialty Wiki, where Favorite Job Candidate has been posting on first.
5) Click on My Favorite Job.
6) See that there's nothing new next to the "Accepted:" box.
Wash, rinse, repeat.
I know this person has the right to stretch this thing out, but it's already been through one rejection from Even More Favorite Candidate, and Less Favorite Candidate (number three, yours truly) starting to get itchy here.

In times past, if the kids were coming from a place with sketchy schools, then they might have had an edge for getting into good colleges. I don't know how admissions is working these days, however. |

So - I finally landed a FT teaching gig, but not in the area I wanted (geographically or subject matter-wise). It's going "ok." Today I saw a job at a 4 year school 20 minutes from my house. (Instead of the 1.5 hr commute I have now.) I honestly don't think I have a snowball's chance in hell at getting it.
Should I AFTDJ?
