Have any of you heard of the International Journal of Arts & Sciences?  They run a huge conference.

Do you think this is a scam?

Definitely.

Though it's not so much as scam as it is an opportunity to have a vacation and 'conference paper' or 'publication' if members of your department can be duped into the validity of this nonsense.

At least the conference fee is not outrageous ($340 compared to the Oxford Round Table's effective $1040 conference fee). Still, there does not appear to be much quality attached to this conference. It is amazing that these alleged conferences are proliferating. This is going to go badly for academia eventually.

Hasn't this conference been discussed before?  I can't find the thread unfortunately.

You are among the Pure and Truthful, however small their Number.
My goodness, that was an exceptionally good analysis of the forum.

Here's one such thread. I believe there was at least one additional thread about a conference or conferences put on by this group.

To me, forums are more of a relaxing period in which the poster can allow himself or himself to be lost in a sea of wonder.

No - it is not a scam. Anyways, it's no more of a scam than academia in general is a scam.

I liked the reply of researcher009 to this, so I'll repost it:

It's all a matter of predilection, I guess. Some delegates prefer to attend multidisciplinary conferences, others prefer a conference with a narrow focus. Whether by design or due to the changing times, multidisciplinary conferences are increasingly in demand. See extensive list of such conferences at:  http://www.conferencealerts.com/multi.htm
Some professors take an ivory tower attitude towards everything academic (complaining about not getting a bed at Harvard or the poor quality of the food at a French conference many years ago). Others uphold and cherish freedom of association with other professors in other disciplines, in and outside the conference premises. What we say in class does not necessarily comport with our university's official position. Just because a conference comes to town doesn't mean that town hall endorses its views. The more service that comes with a conference, the more I feel honored to be part of a wider academic community. I can't stand listening to conference presentations day after day. Why do you think conferences are held in Las Vegas' casinos and in whisky-washed New Orleans? Why do you think we post barbs and humorous snippets instead of fully fledged research in these columns? There is more to life than boring conferences in boring locations. Which is why I quit attending conferences for a number of years. Instead of listening to research uttered on a podium, I would rather access it through my university's library database. Nowadays, I have realized that if a conference doesn't also include entertainment and relaxation, it has no value for my money. I spend countless hours locked in my university cell. If I am going to travel by plane and lodge in a Motel 6, there better be much more than boring professors with a narrow view of the world at my destination. Send me the tour bus and the Courvoisier! My femininity can’t be trapped in dark and damp conference halls. Let the sun shine.

^ Good luck with that, wealthy conference organizer. And if you're not a conference organizer, then you are a professor scamming your university by going to crap conferences for lifestyle reasons, rather than good conferences in less interesting locations. Obviously you aren't participating enough in the sessions either, if you've got all that time for boozing.

If you want to travel to fun places, do what the rest of the world does - book a holiday on your own dime.

Oh, and for anyone interested - the easiest way to tell a scam conference is by looking for the keyword "virtual presentation." I cannot think of a single good conference that has these.

aasta, your post suggest that you're scamming us, or that you've never been to a proper academic conference. Every conference I go to has recreation and relaxation: it's call the conference hotel bar (cocktail lounge, if you're fancy). I don't drink much, but when I do....

Also, the idea that most or many conferences cause us to stay in Motels 6s is false, and, to some of us, is a dream--who wouldn't want to stay at an affordable hotel for a conference.

And, yeah, interdisciplinarity, yada yada. I am a big fan of it. I don't think it's promoted by pi$$ing away money on lame conferences.

Oh, and why are conferences held in NOLA and Vegas? Because those cities have a s**tload of really cheap hotel rooms, and big venues that appeal to the conference trade. In the end, you really don't know what you are talking about, do you?
