I'd like to see a new forum for those of us who have already retired, or are getting close to retiring from a career in higher ed.  Some relevant posts now appear in On the Money and Leaving Academe, but retirement encompasses more than simply the loss of income, and retirees don't usually leave academe for another workplace.

In addition to serving as a central place for relevant discussions, having a separate board might encourage more retirees and retiree-wannabes to join the fora.

Anyone agree?

Mycellf:  As a very recent retiree, I'd be interested.  Just last week I learned about and joined TIAA-CREF's online community for retirees at myretirement.org.  There hasn't been enough time yet for me to be able to see if it's what you and I might be looking for.

mycellf,

Thank you for the suggestion. I'll talk the idea over with the other moderators, and we'll see what we can do.

Best wishes,

Thanks, Mods.  I'll post on the current board, and I guess  if there's a new one created, you can move these.

Michigander:  Thanks for the link.  It seems to get a bit less traffic than here, and the font is even smaller, but I'll probably see you around there.

I saw a notice for that. Do you have to be retired or can you be 'thinking about retirement'? Job-wise, I'm not planning on going anywhere, but age-wise, I am approaching retirement age and in another few years, may even be eligible for phased out retirement at my institution. I need to start thinking thinking about this stuff.

I'd also like to see comments from single folks contemplating or in retirement and how being single affects planning (aside from having to do it all on your own).

btw - as a 'Michigander' by marriage and education, I love seeing your name when it pops up (I think it reminds me of my good times in Michigan) and just want to say 'hey.'

It's for TIAA CREF participants who are retired, or getting close to it.  Discussions on financial issues, family, travel, volunteering, health and fitness, and musings on how to spend the retirement years.  The participants are from a broader range of careers than the CHE boards, since TIAA-CREF is not restricted to colleges.

Hi folks,

At your suggestion, we've created a new forum for retired academics and those contemplating retirement. Please post away.

Thanks.
