I have been refilling the inktanks (from ink bottles and a syringe) on a Canon printer.  The last few days as I have been rinkting photos, the pink (red) is dim. Sometimes yellow ink fills in where the pink should be.  The pink ink tank has plenty of ink in it.

The printer has a "clean inkjets" option that I have run, and this seemed to help.  I was wondering whether I could disassemble the printer and clean it myself somehow.
Otherwise, I may just buy a new printer.

If you've been repeatedly refilling the cartridges, try buying new ones.  The nozzles and other parts may just have 'worn out'.

Unfortunately, it is sometimes cheaper to buy a new printer.

Where do you buy your ink to make this worthwhile? I've been ordering from http://www.inkgrabber.com/ and it costs me $5 per cartridge for my brother printer. $4 and $3 in bulk, but who needs that much ink! :) Then, make sure to head to http://www.retailmenot.com/view/inkgrabber.com to grab a coupon code for either 20% off, or free shipping - whichever amounts to the bigger discount.

I know this is true, but it is sad.  If you do buy a new printer, look to see how much cartridges are.  Sometimes a cheap computer isn't so cheap once you have to buy new cartridges.

The ink for the new Kodak printers is supposed to be much cheaper than the HP cartridges, which are ridiculously high, but then I'm not a fan of HP.

How old is the printer?

It's a ridiculous question, actually.  I just replaced my computer and bought a new (HP--sorry, Pry!) color inkjet printer for like $20.  Just buy a new printer and recycle your old one, or move it to No. 2 computer, or give it away, or something.  It isn't worth trying to rehab a printer that's more than a couple of years old.

The cartridges that come with a new printer contain about a quarter as much ink as cartridges bought separately - it may be worth factoring that in when deciding what to buy.

Thank you everybody!

I have added ink to the cartridges more than one, and although that has worked, I have not been able to fill them without making a mess.  I did not have problems with the colors until this week.  i may try to fill another set of used cartridges, and keep the printer working for a while.  After all, it seems to print text without a problem.

But I will probably shop around and decide what I want to buy for printing photographs.
One vent, the ink in this printer at least, drys up when the printer just sits.  I do not take and print photographs every week.

If you aren't using it regularly, take the cartridges out and put them (standing up) in a ziplock bag with a piece of moist paper towel (just a bit of moisture).

I've cleaned printers and it's not that hard.  Just keep track of the screws, have q-tips (cotton buds?), paper towel and rubbing alcohol handy.  However, it may take 2-3 hours and may require a friend's assistance.  Have some jeweler's screwdrivers handy (the tiny tiny ones).

However. This might be a good opportunity to upgrade to a laser printer, where you'll get a) better value per off label cartridge b) never have to refill anything ever again.

It's also the time of the year where these things are even cheaper.

If you don't need the color, get a laser printer - I did this about a year ago and could not be happier.  They are not that expensive now, and while toner/drum are more expensive - they last much longer.  You can get refill kits/re-manufactured toners and drums too.

The cost for a B&W laser is not bad, you can get a few decent models for just over $100.

Resurrecting a year-and-a-half old thread... to post a spam link... in Polish.

There should be a special award for this.
