History is looking very bad indeed . . . That of course depends on what kind of history you do. In my AHA field there's no date or list or anything like that, and the earliest jobs come out in mid July. Though it is still early, I already saw 10 positions I can possibly fit into, all ft tt, most in good research institutions in desirable locations. That is more than the total number of positions advertised last year, and we're not in September yet, so it gives me some reason for optimism. And I'm sure there are other fields like that - maybe not English, US or European history - but I'm sure there are, even in the humanities.

I've been depressed about it too - but only because I'm really anxious to apply for jobs. I'm in a STEM field, so it is reasonable to not expect ads for a while - but I want them NOW!

Funny how it varies from field to field thanks to the tiny sample size. I'm 0-for-2010, and it's not that there aren't any jobs, it's that there aren't any jobs in my field. Then again, if three schools pop up on Monday, we go from a drought to to the land of plenty.

Please pardon my ignorance, but are there any AHA fields besides history? Or are all the AHA fields subfields of history?
For what it's worth, I'm in a subfield of an MLA field where last year's 2 positions counted as a target-rich environment for applications.

are there any AHA fields besides history? Assuming AHA stands for American Historical Association (which, as far as I can tell, it does), the "fields" really refer to subfields. From my experience, 80% of people going to the AHA conference do US or European history. But, of course, there are other subfields such as Central and East Asian, Latin American, African, and Middle Eastern. And those who are in one of the latter (myself included), seem to be in a better position when it comes to ft tt positions. A better position means 50-100 people competing for each position instead of hundreds. That still means that without the PhD in hand, peer review publications, and real teaching experience no one looks at you, but since statistically the chances are better, I try to stay optimistic.

Also, some subfields skip the AHA meeting - often history of science jobs interview at the HSS meeting.

I am also in a STEM field as well, primarily looking at cc for a position. There was one FT TT position in my state (northern part), that I was considering applying for (which starts in Jan 2011), but the max salary is exactly what I make right now as a HS instructor - and we have been on a salary freeze for 4 years now.
So I have decided to not really bother with it.
But I feel the anxiety too - I am finishing up a 2nd MS degree directly in the STEM field... which my 1st MS is in Sci Edu.
So I am hoping come 1st qtr of 2011 will see some position postings open up.

You're not going to get a TT science ed position without a doctorate and 3-5 years of K-12 teaching experience. What kinds of positions are you planning to apply for, with the second MS?

They are just FT cc science instructor positions...nothing more. I have basically given up on the whole science education thing with positions anywhere. I was in a doctorate program - finished all coursework , passed comps, got into it with my advisor regarding research topics - couldn't reach a consensus/agreement.......so I backed out and resigned from the program. I just did not want to be a teacher teaching teachers anymore - heart wasn't into it. So I am finishing up a Geology graduate degree to compliment my MS in Sci Edu so I can be more marketable for FT CC science instructor positions next year. I figure with 7 years as secondary instructor and 3 years as an adjunct - I might have a shot of getting some interviews......

I wish you the best--and I'm sorry to hear the the PhD in science ed ended up becoming a problem for you--there actually are jobs in that. My understanding is that the geology market at the CCs is weighted toward folks with some professional experience in the field (at least in my general region--the Midwest). Do you have some kind of background with the government and/or business to go along with the academic credential? And do you have 18+ graduate credits in any other science field? Finally, have you been reading the job listings for CC science instructors so you have a realistic sense of the qualifications? Getting a sense for how one fits in terms of the larger field can be very, very important.

I don't have problems with lack of job ads, my problem is passing the interview which I always seem to fail. Probably competition is fierce since there are a few openings.

This is my first year dabbling in the market (I'm in an AHA field). I expected a bad market, but maybe optimistically hoped for a slight upswing. I've been astonished to hear trusted sources tell me what a terrible year or what a positive year this is shaping up to be. I can't quite get a handle on it.

Be careful with this. Have you looked at your local CC faculty that teach geology? 99% chance they have a PhD. I've even seen CC faculty presenting research at international conferences (and damn good research, at that).
