So, what's going on?
Is the Chronicle trying to ingratiate itself with the cost-cutters who'd replace us all with holograms and use profit per student as the main yardstick for everything (except admin salaries)?
I'm seeing ridiculous article after article. Let's get rid of the offices! (Um, riiight, that's the problem facing us. Also, never mind FERPA or productivity). Let's get rid of tenure so professors are freer to be daring (What, the adjuncts they would hire as replacement are going to be intellectually daring since they can be fired at will?)
I agree that higher education has many challenges. I'd like to see them discussed. But these articles are plain anti-faculty (especially of the pesky tenure-track kind) and blatantly stupid. And where are the intelligent articles discussing real problems?

Now now; blaming educators is the latest trend, so I'm not surprised that cutthroat animosity would jump from the HS world to the Higher-Education world.
We all need to make sacrifices so that bankers can get their bonuses.

The Chronicle has learned what sites like Huffingtonpost and Foxnews already know: page views and clicks make money.
What's an easy way to get page views and clicks? Post an article that's designed to excite or anger readers. Works in the short term, though if one relies on this strategy too often the brand can be damaged.
In other words, you're all being manipulated! Ahha ha hahahahahahahahaha!
Oh darn - me too.

Maybe we're not supposed to shoot the messenger. Maybe the Chronicle is publishing these articles to help the new faculty be more successful in the future by exposing them to the latest issues/challenges. A kind of training, perhaps; no pain, no gain!

Trouble is, the enemy that the Chrony is targeting is...are...their subscribers. Did Walt Kelly realize at the time how prophetic he was?

Exactly! I don't need to pay for uninformed crap about cushy faculty jobs and maybe we should also eliminate water fountains, too... On the other hand, there is a real crisis that needs to be discussed.

Eh, the CHE just probably checked their stats and noticed on which side their bread is buttered.
We faculty read the CHE online for free through our library's database of e-journals, and maybe occasionally cadge our department's hard copy after it has sat there for a week unthumbed.
Admins, on the other hand, are paying subscribers. I bet my university's president probably gets both a personal hard-copy subscription, and the online version.

It's just a sign of the times. We're all lazy, selfish, terrible teachers who just want tenure so we can have garden parties and sip sherry.

It's not clear to me what counts as "anti-faculty." I agree with farmboy. Is this http://chronicle.com/article/The-Adjunct-Rip-off-10-Rea/46365/ an anti-faculty article? I believe not. It says that adjunct teaching is not as good as needed, but it's not their fault. That makes it an anti administration article. I just noticed the date, 2000.

This is why they'll never give us an ignore-user button. They think our internecine squabbles here are draws to the board. They might be right.
