I noticed today a one-off that might be attributed to something someone said here on the Health Issues Board.  Now, I cannot, of course, prove that this is the case.  But inasmuch as I think it could even possibly be the case, it raises a fine opportunity to make this declaration.

I use this board to think out loud and consult other people for whom similar issues may apply.  The nature of discussions here are sensitive and often involve the discussions of health conditions we have that are not our fault.

That is why if someone declares, for example, on this board, that (s)he is a manic depressive who has narcissistic personality disorder, it is OFF LIMITS to go to the one-off thread and say something hideous, heinous and snarky, like "Sure, I JUST KNEW everything always was about you."

Now, of course, I don't have the power to enforce this suggestion.  I'm just saying that there are consequences to one-offing the quasi-confidential posts that occur herein.

(1) You will further deter people who fear the cleverly, thinly veiled passive-aggressive ridicule of the one-offs thread (which is vile, a mistake, should never have been created and which I regret ever participating in) from posting candidly about conditions and problems which may need the helpful advice and attention of others.

(2) You will make an enemy of post_functional for life.

(3) You will also incur the wrath of a small army of disability scholars on this board.

This really should go without saying, and people should have the decency to know where obvious lines of social transgression lay.  But if not, I'm making my feelings on the matter known in no uncertain terms.

Thank you.

Well, anyone who uses the one-off thread has plenty of mental health issues themselves. I think it should be deleted by the mods (and no, not because I'm a frequent target of it--because I think it's cowardly and pathetic).

I agree with you, PF. Not that I have a problem with the one-offs thread at all, because our opinions on the thread itself are very different, but I do agree that one-offing anything written on this particular area of the fora is highly insensitive and counter-productive for anyone involved.

I'm glad you brought this up, PF. I've participated in the one offs thread, mostly in the beginning. My posts are much fewer and farther between these days. I didn't even see the post you are talking about because I rarely even look at it.

But I agree. I think it takes a very low person to one off a post on one of these threads. We aren't here arguing points of view on political or what have you subjects. We are discussing diagnoses, treatments, and support systems. We are sharing our experiences and fears about illnesses, some of them quite delicate. It is bad enough we have to deal with them, we don't want to deal with them alone, but sometimes it is easier to come here to talk about them than to go talk to someone face to face.

Please don't take this space of comfort and support away from us by making snide and hurtful remarks about something which you probably don't and won't understand.

For what it's worth, I don't think that particular one-off was about anything on this board.

I hope not, whatever it was.

I have to agree with the notion that we shouldn't one-off the health issues board.

Unfortunately, I think conjugate gives good advice.

I don't know to which you refer, but the situation is still that you wouldn't know for sure anyhow. So I support this opening post, wholeheartedly.

a) Neither LHC nor One-Off's deserves my participation so they don't get it (or almost never).

I agree, the cheap shots people find such glee in making have mostly just lowered my opinion of those people, itself a loss, from my perspective.

Definitely, people who are dealing with serious health issues don't need snarky comments on top of everything else.

b) Of course, if that's happening, one could also just see "a" above...but just running across the thread by happenstance, especially for someone less clear about its ?uses, could be upsetting and it's better if the possibility of that doesn't exist from the outset.

c) Good call, P-F.

It's not cowardly and pathetic. We don't say things to people's faces for a good reason--the Mods will ban us, so insults once removed are better than no insults at all.

I don't one off the health forum, though. That's just tacky and insensitive.

I don't think anyone has. It's rather pointless to take such a vehement a stand on an issue that doesn't seem to exist. I think people can rest easy on that score, is what I'm saying. There's no sense in worrying that people are reading these posts, and thinking - or worse, actually writing - snarky comments, if there haven't been any so far.

Grassy is right. Nobody one-offed the health board.
