hiding out from my grading. Shhh!

« Reply #75 on: August 02, 2010, 02:33:15 PM »

For the rest of the semester, every so often after questions by a handful of students, I could hear the whispers of, "Yeah, 'cause we wouldn't to accidentally learn too much in class.  Slacker."

I *love* this line. Yea for you and your students!

I notice that I'm missing a "want" in that line after the "wouldn't", but yeah, I was pretty proud of my whisperers of that line, especially since many of them were the education majors who told me how much they enjoyed my class even though they hadn't previously liked science class, but now they were eager to get out to teach science to their kids.

Confused and sad. Or happy. I'm not sure...

I am in my office.
I have 2 of 3 syllabi finished.
I still need to finish this last one and then finalize some ppts for early fall lectures.

Otherwise I think I am <gasp> ready.

I might actually be able to enjoy the rest of the summer.
As soon as you're done getting Alan's materials ready, swing by my office. I have a stack of work for you.

Now maybe I can enjoy the rest of summer.

I got the classroom I wanted all along! I feel better already, so let the fall semester begin!

Ask and ye shall be told 'no.' B$tch and they'll do anything to shut you up.

My least favourite word to encounter first thing in the morning: "waitlisted."

And I'd hoped for a small(ish) class for that one. Oh well.

One of the things I am avoiding doing is looking at the rosters.  At this point, I'm uncertain about whether I hope that one particular class is filling up more rapidly than it had been or whether I should hope that it will be canceled for lack of enrollment since my fall is looking busier than it did when I agreed to teach that new prep mostly online.

I had 55 on my waitlist this morning for Super Jumbo Intro to Science Class and the emails have already started coming in: "will I get to add this class?" "What do I have to do to get into your lab section?"

Blech.

New Year's resolution: Teach to the syllabus

« Reply #81 on: August 03, 2010, 02:43:41 PM »

I sat down today to start adjusting the syllabi from prior years to match the new text and calendar. I also have my handy fall-prep to-do list written out. I continue to add to it.

I have now officially begun to panic (OMGhowamIgoingtogetthisdoneintime!).

Denial was a lot more fun. More restful, too.

I think I need to swing by the hiding thread and hunker down until June.

I'm still in denial. I think I'll go outside and weed my garden, prune hedges, or clean the pool instead of the long list of to do items that I have.

I've started, just barely and grudgingly, on syllabi. I have also made the mistake of checking my rosters. A quick skim (restraining myself from going back for a proper review) shows five, count em five, solid D students and two I failed for plagiarism.

Gah.

Opening a bottle of wine now.

I don't have to worry about my rosters until August 12, when registration reopens. They can register in April or August and evidently just have to sit on their hands in between.

Lizzy, can I have a glass of that wine? Never mind, I'll get my own bottle ...

This fall, I'll have 6 sections total; 3 sections each of 2 non-majors science courses at a CC. Luckily, no new preps.
I'm having an incredibly difficult time facing the start of this semester, as it may well be my last semester to have to teach over-crowded classrooms of under-prepared, uninterested students (save for a handful of truly enjoyable students!).
In about a week, I'll change the dates on last semester's syllabi, post some PPT notes on the CMS and call it "good."
Don't worry; I don't plan to do this much longer; just completed my MLIS degree, have applied for only 5 positions so far at R1 institutions, and have already been called for 2 interviews ....
~fingers crossed~ that by January, I'll be a Librarian!
