No happy socks because nobody gets Manitoba.

Well, I bought the gel toe separator ($4.99 for two at the local Walgreens) and I can see why it's a good idea now that I'm wearing one.  Though I don't have any pain right now, the separator feels really good.  I won't be able to wear it with my Croc flip-flops (which also feel pretty good) but I will make a point of wearing the separator on a regular basis.  If things get worse, I will absolutely go to a podiatrist.  Right now I think, given the intermittent nature of the pain and swelling, I don't need serious orthotics and I definitely do not need surgery at this junture.  If I can manage it with stuff from Walgreens, well, I'll be a happy camper.

I truly do appreciate the stories and suggestions you guys have shared.  Thank you so much.  It really helps to know that I'm not on my own with this.  I'm so sorry that so many of you have been dealing with this for so much longer than I have!

Update:  I saw a podiatrist today and I do not have a bunion (or gout).  He did x-rays and so forth and it's clear to him that I seriously jammed my big toe at some point in my adult life, because I have trauma-induced osteoarthritis and some bursitis in my left big toe only.  The x-rays show absolutely no arthritis anywhere but my left big toe.  He advised me to wear shoes that are relatively loose in the toe box (as we in the podiatry game call it), to use Ben-Gay or something similar when it hurts, to take short strides (to reduce upward stress on the toe and which I kind of do already being a short person), and to come in when it gets inflamed again.  He suggested an outpatient surgical procedure if the toe really starts to bother me constantly.  So, as happens so often for me, it's an idiopathic issue rather than some normal kind of condition...

If you'd not had that nasty habit of kicking people's asses you'd not have this problem.  See, your mother was right!

(Spouse has proto-bunyons and uses the toe spacers.  Makes a tremendous difference for her.)

Ah--so now we need a little support group for the other b-word: bursitis. This is what my supposed stress fracture turned out to be, too--in the end of my 5th metatarsal right behind my little toe. (My little toe, BTW, was crushed when I was a teenager and walked edge-on into a door, which is what led to this issue.) My new podiatrist has now given me orthotics and some rub-in anti-inflammatory gel, so we'll have to compare results. :)

Ouch!  One of my brothers has bunions on both feet for some reason, and my mother did as well.  I don't and I'm glad of it.
