Hyphens, anyone?
...and just like that we're back to balls being nailed to a wall, presumably alongside the ding-a-ling who put them there to begin with.
Well, thanks for the hyphens, anyway.

I am unclear as to what degree is or will be from the Ivy League, but yeah, the Ivy League was bandied about at one point on why getting a job is so hard since those rubes (my term) are prejudiced against Ivy Leaguers.

I know that an Ivy League degree doesn't always correlate with general (or specific) intelligence, but DAMN.

Discussions on these fora sometimes remind me of the old saying:
Never try to teach a pig to sing. It wastes your time and it annoys the pig.

I don't think that's funny at all. Some people are naturally in charge of keeping the agenda so the meeting runs on time and some people are the creative sorts who run with random ideas all the time. In my view, the funny thing is that I am the keep-to-the-agenda person in physical life for meetings with a defined purpose, but I'm often the distractor here.

I wasn't thinking so much of "keeping the agenda" as I was of being the bogeyman, as in "DvF's gonna get you if you don't watch out." - DvF

I'm a joker here and in my classes, but in the department I'm sort of a eminence grise. I think I'm perceived as a bloc of one. The chair and I have been on the same page (this is where I get my influence) for the last few years, and now that her mentor has retired, I'm a decent ally.

Oh, I didn't read it that way, possibly because I'm not afraid of you or of being scolded in general. I am, however, working on being more polite and being a team-player in group situations. After all, STFU is supposed to be my mantra starting in August.

After all, STFU is supposed to be my mantra starting in August. I don't see that as likely, Polly, and I'm glad: I didn't STFU pre-tenure, and I think it's deeply unhealthy for departments if new faculty STFU all the time. Sure, you want to get the lay of the land before shooting your mouth off, and you want to remember that sometimes people who've been around a while might have good reasons for holding the views they do, but within those parameters, I for one think it's entirely appropriate for new faculty to be seen AND heard.

Oh, I was definitely offered the job because I didn't even manage STFU in the interview (how will I revitalize this department as the sole member since the previous department is retiring? Well, start taking notes 'cause I'm full of ideas and plans!). But I have written in my how-to-manage-the-TT notes that I am supposed to do reasonable STFU, so I'm going to try that for some issues. The cafeteria has definite remediable problems, but I'm not going to try to tackle that right away.
