Came across Fish's article on classical education in high schools and wondered why they haven't all succumbed to the various social pressures at work elsewhere--romantic formalism in progressive education, multiculturalism, etc.

If they're so consistently good, why don't they serve, not just as a rebuke to schools devoted to other educational philosophies, but as models for reform?

Anyone know of histories and surveys of such schools?

I am working in one now, worked in another in Florida 04-5.  Various things come to mind, in way of answering your very good question-- in no particular order of importance:

1)sometimes the classical/ Latin language programs are shams, use sub-qualified teachers, etc.
2)Even by private and other christian school standards, salaries are abysmal
3)tuitions similarly extremely low
4)good PR
5)target parent populace presupposed to believe/ respond to CC school propaganda
