I am new to this forum but I found a lot of very helpful advice here. However, I did not find any information about the size of typical "start-up" packages awarded to new lecturers in life sciences and engineering in the UK (expensive lab equipment required).

Any input greatly appreciated!!!

I never heard of a generic start-up-package. From my experience, it is normally rather simple: you tell them what you need - they tell you what you get. It pretty much depends on what funds the department has available at the time (internal monies and external funds) and, more importantly, how you can advertise the benefits resulting from your fancy new equipment.
