The query about wanting to be removed as second author reminded me of my own supervisor's behaviour that seems odd to me, but perhaps may be more ordinary than I realise. He has taken a particular position on a topic that we both work on - say, when people are basketweavers their sole identity is as basketweavers - whereas I take quite a divergent position: basketweavers see basketweaving as a small part of their identity.

Here's the oddity: the norm in our department is that the supervisor is (almost) always listed as a co-author. My supervisor wants the co-author position on my papers and articles even when their primary argument is to assert my position - basketweaving is a small part of their identity - in opposition to his. He's youngish and insecure, so he's always happy to accrue publications. Has anyone else encountered this?

sounds like your supervisor is just counting pubs. You probably do need to have him on as a co-author (for now), however I would point out that the paper is a contrary position and that people may think he's contracting himself-- up to him anyway.
