A friend has mentuioned to me that I might want to start dressing more like a dean than a professor. So, I have to ask: what do deans (female) wear? Or, more properly, what should they wear? And wear does one purchase appropriate decanal garb?
My wardrobe is like AANDSDEAN - Business suits and/or sport coat (my colleagues say I dress like a business dean). Not sure about the female equivalent... Ann Taylor (or Loft) ??

How does your friend dress? Does she know what she's talking about? Does she want you to look more dignified, trustworthy, authoritative, and better--or does she want you to look frumpy?
You can probably fine-tune your current "uniform" by upgrading the quality of fabrics, fit, and construction; by including some more formal choices (suits rather than separates); and by considering hair, makeup, and accessories (watch, bag, shoes, jewelry, glasses if you wear them, etc.) as suggested earlier.
The corporate/attorney look tends to look less formal on women than on men. (You weren't serious about asking if there are stores where lawyers shop, were you?) The female deans, provosts, and presidents I've known tend to split into a female-relaxed-corporate group and a "how unflattering can I make this"-Hillary-Clinton-without-bright-colors group.

In general, business or business casual is de rigeur in my past experience. On special occasions, such as onopening day of Spring Fling, the Deans (oneof each gender) came in wearing a Tshirt and jeans (had suits in the office just in case) because both were alums of fraternities and sororities on campus and wer participating in some 'events' (involving pie-eating etc).
Dress should be appropriate to the need of the moment, but at minimum, business casual.

They wear sharp business dress and smell faintly of sulfur.

How do clogs disguise cloven feet?
Clogs are wide and bulky enough to accommodate exactly that. The Dansko type clogs, like this.

Scarves. They're my answer to every stylish need. Black anything with a scarf is dressy enough for donors. Rumple 'em up a bit, if you need to look hard-working. Use them to the throttle the fellow administrator/faculty member/president...

In this economic climate, I expect my dean will be wearing this next year.
