A friend has mentuioned to me that I might want to start dressing more like a dean than a professor. So, I have to ask: what do deans (female) wear? Or, more properly, what should they wear? And wear does one purchase appropriate decanal garb?

All the female deans I see wear boxy-ish suit-type things. (But all the female deans are on the boxy side, themselves, at my school.)
I haven't seen any deans in flowy batiked linen - the look is far more businessy than typical professor attire.

My Dean wears a baseball cap. He does take it off while giving talks to alumni, parents and higher-ups but most days, it is on.

It sounds like your friend is really telling you that you are dressing too casually or sloppily. Is that true? What do you wear now?

The few female deans on my campus tend to favour the knit polyester/stretch pants with elastic waistbands/sacklike garment schools of dress, which I just cannot do. As a professor, I go for tailored slacks in natural fibres, nice blouses (no flowers or frills) and jackets. Do I go for the lawyer look? Are there lawyer stores?

Ursula, I think your description of what you wear now sounds fine, really. Tailored slacks, nice blouses, and a jacket--sounds comfortable and businesslike all at the same time. Mix it up with a skirt every so often, and I think you'd be set. The lawyer look might scare people--almost too formal, unless you're in a college of business or law.
I had a dean friend (a woman, late 50s) who had only 5 'dean outfits.' Each one was a combination of jacket and tailored slacks, and she could vary the look with different blouses or shells, sometimes adding a scarf or chunkier jewelry as accessories. Even though her wardrobe was a bit predictable, it seemed to strike a good balance between casual and formal, which is something I think a lot of people would appreciate in a dean.

Are your pants and jackets the same color or mixed? I think that keeping them the same color gives a more dean-ish look. Or at least go for dark color on both pants and jacket.
Hair style and shoes are the punctuation marks that set the tone for your look. You can keep the clothes exactly the same but drastically change how your appearance is perceived with a change of hair style and shoes.

You are potentially asking donors for thousands of dollars. You are meeting with political figures who control aspects of your universities budget. You are potentially interacting with the media on a regular basis. You are meeting with industry representatives who you hope will hire your graduates. I am not saying you need to get brand name custom tailored outfits but you are representing the University and a large part of your duties are image related.
Hope this helps,

One of the female deans at my school is a very flashy/fancy dresser. It's classy, but definitely more flamboyant than I am used to seeing. I think she pulls it off.

Well, you don't do this stuff every day. I wear suits on the days I'm doing this kind of thing, and slacks and sportcoats on the other days. Yesterday I was cleaning my office, so I wore nice jeans, "casual dress" shoes, and a university polo shirt. Ursula, I'd put your current wardrobe in the "every day, internal-business" category of deanwear. You do need the power clothes for external activities, but if you're not yet a dean (can't remember), and don't do those external activities, you'll just look anal.

OK, I'm going to sacrifice some of my Heterosexual Points for you. What about cosmetics and accessories? The clothes sound fine, but do you pull off the professional look with the total package?

As with all things, it depends. What is the type of institution? SLACs/LACs are different than research oriented universities even within the same overall field. Schools of business, medicine, dentistry, allied health, law, and nursing are different than the others in that they are seriously formal. The level of formality could also be related to the former incumbent in the dean's spot. A particular dean here has most likely made the next dean's wardrobe more formal based on the reaction to the current wardrobe...
