I am interested in pursuing a position as an adjunct professor/instructor/teacher at a local college in the Hampton Roads, VA area.  I have a master's degree in Curriculum & Instruction with an emphasis in Special Education.  I have a triple endorsement to teach K-12 students with special needs & I have 8 years special education teaching experience on the elementary and secondary levels.  As I view job postings, none appear to be in areas that I would be qualified to teach because my master's degree is not in a "core" subject area.  I am not currently working in a school system.  I would like suggestions and insight on what I should do regarding my job search.  Do you think I should just start sending my resume to colleges in the area?  Where would I be able to find examples of exemplary CV's for adjunct positions?  What is my first step?  I appreciate your responses:-)

In general (yes, there are exceptions), if you don't have 18 graduate credit hours in the subject (core) field you are toast.  Don't bother.

If you have a combination of some very special experience (not just time on the job) and a position/opening that screams for your unique and demonstrable qualifications, give it a shot.  Who knows?

So, if there is an adjunct position available in Curriculum & Instruction, go for it.

If, on the other hand, the posting is for math (common) or English (more common) and you say, "Hey, I could do that!" don't even bother applying unless you live in maybe central Montana on the wind and snow swept plains.  In Hampton Roads you will be ignored.  Sorry, but you will.

I suggest you email your CV directly to chairs of Ed. departments, with a polite email about which courses (check their online catalog) you are qualified to teach.

Also, my CC would hire someone with your credentials to teach developmental English/Math or College Success 101.
