Hi,

Well I did good work this year and was recommended to return for second temporary year by my dean. Discussions with upper administration led to a national search.

There are 55 applications, mine included. Classes end in 3 weeks. No interviews have been set up yet and they want to decide by the end of May. I am hanging in there, attending meetings, running study groups, preparing classes. I have a summer class, too, and income until mid-August.

I am having a hard time being productive. Another temporary instructor just went through this and was hired as a permanent employee.

Any words of advice?

It seems to me that you're doing about all you can do. Keep on doing your job, and being present and visible to members of the department.

I understand that it's hard to be productive under these circumstances, but I'd suggest digging out a paper to revise, applying to conferences, or even starting a new project. If you can focus on something you're interested in, it will divert your attention to something worthwile and give you something to talk about in the interview that people in the department don't already know about you.

Best of luck to you!

I agree with Lizzy.  Keep your cool, keep calm and carry on, see if you can reorganize your tension toward productive ends by getting absorbed in something else.  You can always hang out here to let off steam.  Good luck!

Thanks for the advice.

That is what I am trying to do.

My distraction is planning a superb summer! I will be paid through August and I will enjoy myself.

Personally, while I would look extremely dedicated and busy at work. I would also polish the C.V. and keep it circulating. My hobby would be to search for and apply to every job out there for which I was arguably qualified. There is no point in being a loyal, dutiful employee, patiently awaiting word whether the employer will keep you or not. When the employer treats you as expendable, then treat the employer as a mere stepping stone.

Loyalty is not owed to the disloyal. Look out for yourself; no one else is.

Besides the other posters' advice, I would advise: keep your perspective.  In some job searches (like one for our provost several years ago) there is already an "Inside" candidate.  In other searches, like the one I just described on another thread, there are no guarantees.  My friend became devastated when hu wasn't picked.

Conduct a nationwide job search. You might get this job or you might not.
