Tapping into the Unadvertised Diversity Searches

Greetings all,
I am a humanities instructor. I teach Spanish, ESOL and English Composition (including developmental). I have an Ivy League undergraduate degree and two master's degrees. I taught for 4 years in high school and have been teaching in college for 2 years as an adjunct. I started my search for a full-time position in October of 2009, and have had three interviews, which I believe to be very good considering the current employment situation and the fact that 2009-2010 was my first year on the market. I would like to know if anyone has any experience in becoming a candidate in unadvertised diversity searches? After reading the comments on this forum, I become aware of such a phenomenon. Does anyone have any recommendations for how I, a double minority (ethnic minority and female), could reach out to potential departments who may be conducting an unadvertised diversity search? I have learned so much from your posts already. Any suggestions that you might have would be very much appreciated.

Yes, they exist. The way you "reach out" to them is to be professionally visible--attend conferences, publish, etc. The two such searches I have observed were at the advanced assistant and associate levels. Candidates were invited to apply.

Without a PhD, even if you are a quintuple minority, you are not likely to get far.

Unadvertised searches do exist, but in my experience they are typically for senior positions. The only way to tap into these is to become a high enough level expert in your field so that you are invited to apply.
