- as soon as I depart these shores in two weeks, the sun will burst out and temperatures will reach the thirties.

No, it will still be dreadfull.. but those of us who remain will LIE and tell you that the sun is out and that it's in the 30s.

At least that's what they all tell ME when I leave the country...

My thoughts exactly. The first week of September would be good; I'm hoping to take some time off.
When are you leaving again? We could do with a dry spell........

Recent weather reports from the spousal perambulations:

North of England - hot [this was some time ago]
Northern Greece - vacation - just about as hot but two days of very heavy rain.
London - hotter than either of these
Southern Africa - conference - colder than anywhere in Europe, including North of England. Cashmere sweater highly recommended as packs small and is very warm.
London again (continuing my Let's Pretend To Be A Journalist excursion) - still warmer than Southern Africa
North of England - where's the electric blanket? as I was wearing my hiking socks in bed last night.

While our colleagues in England complain about the end of summer, I would like to celebrate its return.

It is a glorious day here in the (formerly frozen) north!
