Hello all,

I came up empty on a search for a similar post. Kindly redirect me if this thread already exists.

What's usually meant by "dissertation revision" for a postdoc?

I'm applying for a humanities/social sciences postdoc that involves teaching and research. I must indicate on the application form whether my research project is a dissertation revision or a new project. My project builds directly on dissertation but moves my research into an adjoining area, by taking up a question that I raised in the dissertation as a direction for future research. My immediate goal would be to produce an article from this research, and build expertise in this new area. My long-term goal would be to produce a book by combinging the dissertation with this new research (the dissertation won't stand alone as a book).  I don't intend to revise my dissertation into a book during the postdoc.

I think of my proposed research as a new project. But I have no idea what the conventional understanding of "dissertation revision" is. Because my project extends the dissertation, I'm wondering if it's more appropriate to identify it as a dissertation revision.

Thanks for all comments.

I'd assume dissertation revision meant producing articles or a book based on your dissertation. So I don't think your project is that. It's a new project.

I agree with totoro.  Definitely sounds like a new project.  If it is new data and a new questions - new project!  And lots of people build on questions raised by their dissertation.  Gives  you a solid foundation.  Good luck!
