work visa renewal time

I'm about to renew my work visa. How long did the process take you? I'm trying to figure out the worst case scenario so that I can plan travel around when I might have a passport again.
By the way, any advice on any potential recent changes to the process would be great! I understand I will be given a shorter visa that carries me into the application phase for leave to remain.

My UK visa took about 3 months from application to receipt. That was a few years ago. YMMV.

I just applied for a new visa for a new post. I've been told by HR departments at both my current uni and new uni it usually takes about 6 weeks but could take as long as 8. I just submitted a week ago.
The forms seemed longer this time around and required more documentation than a few years ago. After you apply, they'll send you info to get your biometrics taken (fingerprints and photos) and how to obtain a Foreign National ID card, which you would have gotten if you applied for a visa after Nov 08 (I applied a year before then, so I don't have one).
I'm assuming you know that the new visa needs to come through before your old one ends or else you cannot apply for indefinite leave to remain, so you should plan accordingly.
Feel free to message me if you have any questions - I am no expert, but I did just submit mine and might be able to help.
