I just Surled at a student who, in essence, e-mailed me after being absent for 5 weeks to say, "Did I miss anything?"

Was shocked, of course, that he won't be passing the course.

Actually, I didn't Surl. I kept it within, which may not be good. But now you all know, and I feel better.

When all else fails, let us agree to disagree.

Perhaps we can share Top Surl.  My student came to class every week, but didn't hand in 85 percent of the work--even after I granted her unprecedented extensions.  I first told her to drop the course, and when it was too late to do that, I begged her to withdraw.  Now, of course, she wants an Incomplete.

It happened last semester, same thing (was only 4 weeks though). My response was less-than-surly:

"Nope, you didn't miss anything, we just sat on our hands and sang Kumbaya and waited for your return."

Dang, I can't play because my student who attended a whopping 4 classes out of a possible 24 came up with a documentable medical excuse and was relieved when I insisted that he contact the dean for a late withdrawal without prejudice.  Of course, I have now heard nothing back from either the student or the dean so I suspect that the student has either dropped the ball or been unable to produce documentation, but "Not my problem any more".

If you haven't got either the anatomical or metaphorical balls to post your own question on a pseudonymous internet forum, then academia is the wrong job for you.

The joys of baldness
The joys of erectile dysfunction
The joys of infertility
The joys of failure
The joys of cancer
The joys of death

This will have been another happy day.
