All,

I currently hold an MPA degree and work in higher education.  An opportunity has opened up for me to pursue an MA in Disability Studies.  What I would like to know is, what would some of my options be in if I wanted to continue a career in higher education with both of those degrees.

If you want to be a professor, these days you are best off getting a Ph.D.

You can probably adjunct with those degrees, but that's not really a career.

Disability Studies is an interesting area, but it is very politically loaded.  Often people in DS are highly critical of the medical establishment.  So a degree in DS might not always be perceived as an advantage if you want to be part of the establishment.  You would definitely want to find out other people who have graduated from that DS program have gone on to do.

Thanks for your input and I am sure you are onto something. However, my ambitions in higher education fall more on the administrative side as I am not interested in teaching. But your advice to find out more about the program is certainly on track.  Thanks so much!

The better question might be... What can I do with both degrees that I can't do with the degree I already have?

I think far too often people pursue an additional degree without any specific goal in mind.  Just because the opportunity has opened up doesn't mean it's a good opportunity for you.

Introspection and further exploration of the careers that program completers have are certainly in line.
