I am doing a project on the relationship of education and having a good life from the perspective of graduate students. If you have some time it would be really beneficial for this project if you could answer any or all of these questions. Thank you very much!!

What do you think makes a good life?

Do you think education is essential to this definition of a good life?

What benefits are you expecting to get out of your continued education? E.g. job security? Higher pay? Emotional rewards? Etc...

Are you happy with your decision to go to grad school?

If you are not happy now, do expect your decision to bring you happiness at some later point?

What are the downsides of continuing your education?

What adjectives might you use to describe you experiences as a grad student?

What is your area of study?

Thanks again, any answers are extremely appreciated!

What is the purpose of this project?  If your are a grad student, have you started at your own institution?  Why not just create an online poll?

Your professors were probably afraid of your galactic genius and did everything they could (behind the scenes) to thwart your hedginess.

I don't get the big deal?  It's not the greatest place to post, but if you're stuck I suppose it's a start.

If it's really for a research project, it's textbook bad survey design, and bad survey process on top of it.

If it's not really for a research project, it's disingenuous.

I'll play.  :)

What do you think makes a good life?

Family and the love of a supportive partner.  Enough income to not have to constantly have to think about how to pay the bills.  Good health.  Friends who you care about and who care about you.

Do you think education is essential to this definition of a good life?

Possibly.  Education is a correlate in some of the above.

What benefits are you expecting to get out of your continued education? E.g. job security? Higher pay? Emotional rewards? Etc...

All of those.

Are you happy with your decision to go to grad school?

When I was there I mostly was.

If you are not happy now, do expect your decision to bring you happiness at some later point?

That was part of the reason for going, yes.  And it seems to have worked out.

What are the downsides of continuing your education?

Five years of lost income, leading to much less savings and eventually will lead to less social security.

What adjectives might you use to describe you experiences as a grad student?

Stressful, impoverished, eye-opening, enriching socially and professionally.

What is your area of study?

Educational technology

Jon

OP, I am interested to know what degree you are seeking and if you have had any courses in research design (e.g., the practical and ethical aspects of it).

What do you think makes a good life?

Love and support of a spouse, free time to explore your own intellectual/physical/spiritual pursuits without thinking about how to sustain oneself financially, a strong network of supportive family and friends, access to nature and good health.

Do you think education is essential to this definition of a good life?

Yes.

What benefits are you expecting to get out of your continued education? E.g. job security? Higher pay? Emotional rewards? Etc...

All of the above, including intellectual stimulation and fulfillment of the need to contribute to the body of knowledge.

Are you happy with your decision to go to grad school?

Absolutely.

If you are not happy now, do expect your decision to bring you happiness at some later point?

Absolutely.

What are the downsides of continuing your education?

As always, the possibility of limited job prospects, but that's a concern for anyone both inside and outside of graduate school.

What adjectives might you use to describe you experiences as a grad student?

Exhilarating, stimulating, isolating, humbling, somewhat aimless (at the moment), powerful, freedom, independence.

What is your area of study?

Social sciences

What do you think makes a good life?

Money plus people knowing I have money (and a lot of it) and behaving as though I am important because: I have money. A lot of it.  It would be nice to have a hot guy and a couple of kids and all that---but only after I have money.

Do you think education is essential to this definition of a good life?
Yes, one must have the proper skills. Maybe that is in finance or maybe its hot wiring luxury cars in order to sell them to over the border chop shops. Either way? you gotta *learn* stuff. Whether it is "ojt" or a degree program, its all *education.*

What benefits are you expecting to get out of your continued education? E.g. job security? Higher pay? Emotional rewards? Etc...

An attractive successful spouse, a lovely house, and a security wall to keep out the riff-raffy relatives.

Are you happy with your decision to go to grad school?

Its a good way to spend a few years while I make decisions about important things like: how to make a lot of money.

If you are not happy now, do expect your decision to bring you happiness at some later point?

No, I'm into instant gratification!

What are the downsides of continuing your education?

The sort of people I'm compelled to associate with---many are not stylish dressers and few understand the need to make piles of money.

What adjectives might you use to describe you experiences as a grad student?

Idealistic and optimistic (I'm certain I will reach my ideal: to make lots of money)

What is your area of study?

Philosophy.

What do you think makes a good life?

To vanquish your enemies and chase them before you, to rob them of their wealth and see those dear to them bathed in tears, to ride their horses and clasp to your bosom their wives and daughters...

Do you think education is essential to this definition of a good life?

Learning how to fight is important, yes.

What benefits are you expecting to get out of your continued education? E.g. job security? Higher pay? Emotional rewards? Etc.

Loot, women, towers of skulls, a stolen throne... the usual...

Are you happy with your decision to go to grad school?

Life is pain.

If you are not happy now, do expect your decision to bring you happiness at some later point?
What are the downsides of continuing your education?

Who knows? My skull might end up in somebody else's tower.

What adjectives might you use to describe your experiences as a grad student?

Brutal. Savage. Merciless.

What is your area of study?

War.

Well, thank you very much.  I was highly amused by it myself.

I also enjoyed "timurid" post! Well, done. Esp: "tower of skulls."

I'd answer, but I am afraid the psychological trauma from all this introspection could be a killer. OP, where can I contact your IRB? This is clearly a high risk survey, although more to your results than to your subjects.
