A few hours in Melbourne
«
on:

On my way back to the UK, I've got 6+ hours to kill in Melbourne tomorrow evening.
I was thinking of going into town for dinner (yes, I have a visa). The SkyBus goes to Southern Cross station. Is there anything interesting near there? If not, any alternative suggestions?
Thanks

Southern Cross is freaking huge, and pretty interesting itself. Architecturally, it's absolutely gorgeous. It's not just a railway/bus station, it's also a mega complex, with stores, restaurants, and bars, and I think there may be a hotel there, too. When we visited there was still some construction going on, but it was slated to be finished before the Olympics. The sports stadium is, I believe, across the street (or, at least quite nearby). Between the buses, taxis, and trains you can get to just about anywhere from there, and it's close to the downtown business section. You should have no problem keeping yourself occupied if that's your hub.

Thanks.
I ended up getting a taxi to South Bank for a few pints and dinner. It was lovely, though expensive, and getting out of the airport was absolutely the right thing to do.
